About Alcohol ban in Kerala:

As you may be aware Kerala has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in India. In August, Kerala announced plans to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol and said it aimed to enforce total prohibition in the next 10 years. The plans include shutting down bars and shops selling alcohol and introducing more alcohol-free days. In connection to this liquor shops & bars are closed every 1st day of the month and on all Sundays.

There were 752 licensed bars in Kerala. Out of which 418 were already closed in September itself due to Kerala Governments’ new alcohol policy. These were all bars located on the road side, near the railway station, bus stands etc that had no basic facility like toilet etc. After this, Government asked all the 2 and 3 star hotels to close their bars. However all 2 and 3 star hotels approached the Court to appeal and they got stay until 30th October 2014.

On Thursday, the 30th October 2014, the court also supported the Kerala government by lifting the stay and asked the 2 and 3 star hotels to close their bars. However on 31st October 2 and 3 star hotels filed an appeal in the court in this regard and now court has issued a stay on this decision until the end of November 2014 . We shall update you the decision of High court in the 1st week of December 2014.

This is the current scenario in Kerala regarding alcohol consumption.

Please note liquor can be consumed by foreign tourists in Kerala during their stay. However liquor will be available and served only in Hotels that has got 4, 5 star classification and in classified heritage properties which has a Bar license.

Clients can buy alcohol (wine, beer etc) from the shops available in the city and they can take it to their Hotel room during their stay to consume. Please note after 30th November 2014 we are not sure about the 1 to 3 star hotel’s bar status as the decision is pending in the high court.

Please see the list of classified 4, 5 and Heritage hotels in Kerala for your reference where alcohol will be served. Dispute with regard to serving alcohol exists only for hotels up to 3 star category.
